Park Naturalist Doug Bassett speaks to some of last year's hikers on 01/01/19.
• First Day Hike for Birds, 9 a.m.-10:30 a.m.: New Year’s Day birding trips are a tradition among many birders to start their annual bird list. What better place to start off your 2020 list of birds than Letchworth State Park? Explore a variety of habitats in search of many different species of birds. 1½ miles or less.
• First Day Hikes for Families, 10 a.m.–11:30 a.m.: Using deer trails and other paths, this winter wander explores the forest between Trout Pond and Pine Pond. 1½ miles. Also 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Journey a wooded loop less than one mile on nearly level terrain near the Humphrey Nature Center, observing frozen bogs and Trout Pond. Less than 1 mile.
• First Day Hike to Hike, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: This is a longer, faster paced hike to view the Park’s deepest canyon from several vantage points along the Gorge Trail. 3-4 miles.
• First Day Hike to Learn, 1-3 p.m.: This slower paced hike to Inspiration Point, the Glen Iris Fountain and Middle Falls with more than 200’ descent and 200’ ascent along trails, roads and stairs. This hike has breathtaking views and explores exotic trees from other lands, as well as state and national champion trees. 2 miles.
• Self-guided Hike, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.: Walk at your own pace through the woods on the proposed route of The A.N.T. The A.N.T is a nature trail that will be uniquely suited to individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and others with social and cognitive disabilities yet will enhance the visitor experience for all who walk the Trail. Representatives of The A.N.T will be on hand to provide more information. 1¼ miles.
